Eric's Profile
Hi folks,

I'm Eric Coolen (also known by the alias Tempest or Sturm on several forums), born 27/3/1969, and I'm the proud owner of several Type 53s. I've been in Coventry, nr. Birmingham, the UK's 2nd largest city, since September 1991.

Back then I came across to Coventry University as part of an exchange course in electrical engineering, that I had started at the Polytechnic Osnabrück, (Rocco/Rado-city !), where I finished my BEng (Honours) and the German Dipl-Ing (FH). I continued my studies to obtain an Msc and a PhD in medical instrumentation.

That was in December 1998. Together with a business partner we ran an IT company, Reach Data Technologies Ltd, and also established Reach Instruments Ltd for the further development and commercialisation of a novel pneumotachograph (a lung flow-rate measuring device).

Since 2014 I worked as an educator designing and delivering technical courses in electrical and electronics engineering, sofware design, functional safety and cyber security, automotive networks, and diagnostics to engineers in Product Engineering at Jaguar Land Rover. I spent a good year in the automotive Cyber Security team, where I reviewed tier-1 supplied ECU designs, both hardware and software, to assess their cyber security robustness prior to sign-off and use in JLR vehicles. I then joined the new JLR Learning & Development Academy in 2019 as a Technical Learning Manager Product Engineering/Quality/IT, currently leading a team of 6 technical colleagues, designing and delivering technical learning for all technical roles across the business.

In addition I offer translation and consulting services through edat, who've also created these webpages.

Rocco-Fever:
After some years in the States and Canada I went to school in Germany where at some point of time my Rocco-fever broke out. This wasn't helped by studying in Osnabrück (especially as my neighbour in my student dig had this gorgeous Mk1 which he really used to thrash).

When the Corrado first came out I can still remember my initial reaction: "That looks nice, almost as nice as a Mk1 Rocco!" My journey to the UK did cure my Rocco-fever somewhat, but it flamed up again with the rise of the Internet, and my numerous visits to various Rocco-pages. After 18 years there was only one solution: A Mk1 now sits in my garage drool.

That soon was to be followed by a Mk2, but as there are still quite a few around in the UK, it had to be a special one. The UK, however, had the perfect answer: The Storm special edition Mk2 Rocco.

My initial reaction towards the Corrado hadn't given me peace, especially as my German friend, Dirk Schneider, was naughty enough to further fuel my desire by handing over the keys to his G60 Rado for a 3-day test drive in 2003! That completely threw me. I had to have one of those as well.

In July 2011 the time had come that I sold my Mk2 Roco. It did go to an enthusiast owner all the way in Germany, who had already had an eye on my Mk2 for quite a long time. It still wasn't an easy decision, given I'd owned the Mk2 for 8.5 years. In its place I now have a real 928 S4, 8 cylinders, 5 litres displacement!

Further Hobbies:
Almost everything related to PCs (especially Linux)
Squash and Badminton games
Socialising with friends
Cultural events (concerts, theatre, cinema)
Going to events with any of my Type 53s, meeting up with like-minded Type 53 fans, camping!
